The Clifton Fireplace Company

23 September 2010

A clifton business with a burning passion for fireplaces and wood stoves has opened in Bristol.

The Clifton Fireplace Company, based on Princess Victoria Street, Clifton, offers consumers an “unrivalled selection” of award-winning and bespoke fireplaces, flues and stoves crafted by the world's leading designers.

Owner Oliver Clayson, 32, relocated to Bristol from London after spending a decade in the capital learning the trade with Chesney's – the UK's premier provider of custom fireplaces.

The former operations manager, who is in business with partner Harriet, says he felt the “time was right” to launch the company, both “personally and professionally”.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “After many wonderful years with one of the most respected fireplace companies in London, I had a driving ambition to branch out on my own.

“With a personal desire to relocate to Bristol coupled with Chesney’s lack of regional stockists in the South West, this new venture seemed ideally situated to serve the city's up-market residents.

“We offer high-quality period fireplaces to match period properties in the area, breathing life into rooms and offering a beautiful focal piece to anybody’s property, and also support people with a concern for 'green issues' by offering extremely fuel efficient fireplaces and wood burning stoves.”

The large showroom, split across three levels, contains the latest word in contemporary fireplaces as well as two dedicated “period rooms” where a wide range of historical models in styles including Georgian, Regency and Victorian are on display.

The delicately-sculptured surrounds, crafted using the finest locally-sourced Bath stone and Italian Carrara marble are “outstanding” reproductions of the originals sold at a “fraction of the cost”, says Oliver.

“We also offer a range of stoves that in addition to being visually attractive are up to 85 per cent fuel efficient and are approved for use in smoke control areas such as Bristol, and flueless gas fires, which are a relatively new concept in the UK and are also very efficient.”

“If people are unsure on how flueless fires or indeed wood burning stoves work and how much money they can save by going green, I'm happy for people to drop in and discuss all their needs.

“First and foremost, Clifton Fireplace Company will consult people on their heating needs to make sure that not only are people getting the right design for their home but at the right cost to the customer.”

Currently, Oliver employs one shop assistant at the showroom, open all week, but has big plans for the future.

He said: “I foresee The Clifton Fireplace Company hitting the mark with local residents. We have hit the ground running, being official stockists of Chesney's fireplaces, and along with domestic customers are also going to supply building companies, architects and designers across the region.”

According to Oliver, visitors to The Clifton Fireplace Company will enter a room resembling an “elegant drawing room”, and shop that is “warm and relaxing” as opposed to the “typically sterile” showroom environment.

He added: “Just like a roaring fire, we want to give all our visitors a warm welcome and offer a complete customer service from no-obligation advice to arranging stress-free installation by experienced, qualified fitters.

“We welcome residents to have a look to see what we have to offer and if people require more in-depth information, I’m happy to set aside some time over a coffee to discuss individual requirements.”
