How to travel with sex toys

24 June 2010

Holiday season is (hurrah) gearing up to full swing. Whether glamping, staycationing, running the gauntlet of air strikes or heading to Timbuktu, it's vital to avoid airport embarrassment and safely pack away your erotic gear.

It's quick and easy to do and should help you avoid tussling with airport security over your right to take your favourite sex toys abroad. What does Frank from Airport Security know about your toys anyway and how dare he take your simply devine marabou feather cuffs away from you?

To avoid potential embarrassment follow our hints and tips below.

Going for hold

Perhaps the safest option is to pop your toys into your hold bag, especially motorised toys (those that go buzz!).
Official advice is to remove batteries whenever your vibrator isn't in use, but realistically, who does that? On this occasion though, do. Remove all batteries and store them safely elsewhere (to avoid any battery leakage, pop them in a little bag).

There have been several horror stories of checked luggage vibrating, alerting security and bags being disposed of. In one horrendous case a lady was called off the plane, presented with her suitcase at the side of the plane and her lovingly chosen vibrator being waved in the air to jeers from the ground crew. Needless to say she sued their ass off.

Going for bold

If you feel confident you can stare down Frank from Airport Security, want to join the solo mile high club, or have bad experience of checked luggage, keep your toys close to hand in your hand luggage.

Some key points to remember here are:

- remove the batteries to avoid unwitting vibrations. This will quickly and easily draw attention to you and your favourite friend.

- remember your batteries! There's nothing worse than not having batteries when the moment strikes, so remember to pack your battery supply close to your vibrator.

- put your vibrator into a clear plastic bag (as per your toiletries). Airport Security love these little bags, and if they should handle your precious buzzing friends you want to keep their busy mitts off the actual toy, who knows what icky things they met in somebody else's bag.

- this is one area where our mantra there's no such thing as too much lube? falls flat. Heathrow currently allows tubs of 100ml maximum on their flights. Thankfully, most lubes are available in small tubs, just perfect for your two weeks of holiday desire. Also remember your clear plastic bag to put your 100ml container in. This makes it safer.

Extra care

Need we say it? Glass and ceramic toys need careful packing. Try wrapping them in a towel, or pop them in a spare toiletries bag to prevent any damage being inflicted.

Think voltage

If you have a rechargeable vibrator and you're heading abroad, don't forget the plug adaptor!
So there you go. Save any embarrassment and have a wonderful time with your full range of sex toys and time away from the norm to enjoy them.

Buen viaje, as my Spanish teacher would say. x
