Five Minutes With... Archimedes

26 April 2011

 - Credit:
In the wreckage of the almost non-existent Bristol scene of 2010, Canadian born Noah Villeneuve formed Archimedes. Lying somewhere between Foals and Mogwai, they blend indie, math and post-rock influences to create gracefully off kilter anti-anthems. Combining intricately heartfelt guitar reminiscent of Tubelord and their ilk, and seeped in dreamlike waves of synth, Archimedes flow effortlessly from melodic shores to the peaks of noise that have made My Bloody Valentine so iconic. Archimedes are one of the hardest working bands in the South West and have relentlessly gigged since they formed, they have also supported the likes of: Johnny Foreigner, Shapes, White Rabbits, Active Child, The Neat, Hymns, British India + more.
They are: Noah Villeneuve (Vox + Guitar), Billy Golding (Drums), Patrick Flint (Keys), Jake Leeworthy (Bass).

My work is ...

We are a band called Archimedes. There are four of us. We play instruments. We play songs to people who like what we are doing.

Right now I am ...

We have just taken a 2 week break from relentless writing, gigging, recording and rehearsing. But we are straight back to it; we have a pretty hectic schedule over the next few months.

I've been inspired by ...

N: Amongst many, some popular favourites off the top of my head are artists such as Foals, This Town Needs Guns, Minus The Bear, Hendrix. Other inspirations are drawn from general negativity, anthropology, films that stand the test of time, Bill Hicks & Steve Brule.
B: I’ve just finished reading “love all the people”, a book about the American comic/social critic Bill Hicks. All of his views on politics, alcohol, drugs, religion, and values are forward thinking, creative, very different to any public speaker I’ve heard before, and mostly important, incredibly correct. After reading this book, he has become a big inspiration to me in my approach to day to day life.
J: There will always be far too many to list. Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky, on the music side have always been huge influences on me. On the other side, LOTR, Morgan Freeman and David Attenborough just to name a few.
P: Everything I've ever seen, heard, loved or hated.
More specifically (and chronologically): parental encouragement, my first keyboard teacher, Garageband loops, being introduced to DnB by two blokes at a youth hostel, the Korg Micro X50, meeting Noah and Billy, the 2009 Goodness Christmas Gig at the Louisiana and everything that's happened since.

I'm listening to ...

N: Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Tellison, terrific band who are signed to Big Scary Monsters label and we’re supporting them in June, well worth a listen. I’ve also had a lot of the old Biffy albums on repeat mixed in with some Tears For Fears, Boxer Rebellion, Holy Fuck and Strangelove too.
B: Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of chilled/electronic/ambient music with soothing and calming vibes. I’m really big on bonobo, four tet, and burial at the moment. It puts you in a good place, sets your mind at ease, and allows you to escape from reality from time to time. I’ve also been listening to the entire Minus The Bear discography a lot, no matter what mood I’m in, MTB will never fail to please my ears with their timeless, beautiful music.
J: The “A Genuine Freakshow” album “Oftentimes” has really been hitting the spot of late. Radiohead and Sigur Ros are always good bets when the weather’s been as good as it has. The Boxer Rebellion, This Will Destroy (RIP) and The Winchell Riots etc. You know, anything that steers away from the commercial shoddiness we’re fed.
P: Band-wise, Tangled Hair's new EP 'Apples' is pretty sweet, plus I'm infatuated with 'The Cold Still' by The Boxer Rebellion. One particular release I can't wait for is the latest Incubus album; their latest single 'Adolescents' is fantastic. Recent album 'Computers and Blues' has brought The Streets' discography to a perfect close by refining and combining all their previous sounds. Moving to dance, I'd keep an eye firmly on Bristol's dance scene too - KOAN Sound, Statix and Asa are all native producers who know exactly what they're doing. Lastly, I'd massively recommend exploring the vast network of music blogs around if you're ever stuck for new artists to explore – I'm currently loving most stuff coming out of Musigh (.com) and Hush House (hush-house.blogspot.com).
Bristol's truly one of the best cities in the world for discovering and nurturing talent.

You might be surprised that ...

N: I have Osgood-Schlatter Disease.
B: I am colour blind and can’t really differentiate between blues, pinks and purples, as well as greens, oranges and yellows, which means I can never be a pilot, ah well. I’m also 1/8 Maltese (from Malta).
J: I know all the words to ‘Candle in the Wind’.
P: I've got a B in GSCE French. I'm colour blind, I always get confused between vaguely similar things like cabbage and lettuce, Sweden and Denmark, curry and chilli.

I am really excited about ...

N: So many things to look forward to…A big one for me is our first tour that we are playing in July with some friends of ours from Bradford, should be a riotous few weeks. I’m pretty excited to hear the new Death Cab album too. Also, we’re all going to Amsterdam to live on a canal boat for a week in May, which will be most pleasant.
B: I’m really excited about our national tour at the end of July this year, with a northern alternative math band, NGOD. It’ll be our first real taste of touring for an extended time period, which we’ve been dreaming of since we started playing when we were 13, and it’s amazing to see our hard work pay off. We’ve also recently put out our debut EP “On Spirals” which I’m so proud of, and excited to spread the word about and introduce to new people along the way.
J: Many exciting things to ponder at the moment. A summer of shows, Lots of exciting things lined up. Tour will obviously be a great experience. Festivals, Inter-railing. Elder scrolls Skyrim, Peter Jackson’s- “The Hobbit”. Summer in General will be a huge soul saver.
P: The future of Bristol music – there're so many amazing bands, artists, producers and DJs coming up through the ranks. Bristol's truly one of the best cities in the world for discovering and nurturing talent.

It really annoys me when ...

N: When people become too indulged with their cars. Get a life.
B: People who really annoy me, are infantile, cowardly men who chose to spend their time shouting at people they don’t like the look of from outside pubs on a Friday night because they have nothing better to do, grow up guys, you’re not in year 8 anymore and you’re not impressing anyone, alright? Alright. A minor irritation is people who “mosh” at the most inappropriate gigs. I don’t know, I just don’t get it.
J: Baked beans on your fork handle.
P: I can't give enough time and attention to the people/things I love. Also, when I think I'm going to sneeze but I don't.

I am just about to ...

N: Let’s wait and see what happens shall we?
B: I am about to finish my two year stay at college this June, which has not been the best experience of my life for many reasons, and I’m happy to see the end of it, truth be told. I’ll be taking at least a year out of education to save up some money, buy my dream drum set up, push myself to new limits technically on my instrument, travel, play as many shows as possible, and live a little.
J: Venture to university in London
P: Keep playing with Archimedes, get back into music production in a big way (expect an Archimedes remix EP among other secret treats), start DJing a lot more, make more short films - just generally focusing on and refining what I know and love. When college is finally done and dusted, I'm starting a combined honours music technology degree.
