The Elephant

The Elephant in Bristol is situated in perhaps my favorite area of Bristol. Many people refer to it as the Old Town, it’s just off the back of St Nicholas Market surrounded by busy alfresco style bars, hair salons and a smart Italian restaurant. It’s location is actually very important and sets a cool ambience as you enter the venue. The Elephant Public House was originally built in the 17th century and in 1853 was listed as the ‘Elephant Wine and Spirit Vaults and Slate Billiard Rooms’. The building was demolished in 1863 when Nicholas Street was widened but was rebuilt by architect Henry Masters and completed in 1867.

More recently the building as it stands has been home to several businesses over the last 4 years. But the new owners have made their mark on the building and created a really calming atmosphere with lots of warm bare wood and Mediterranean coloured wall paint.

The Elephant offers high quality, traditional good pub food using fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, a choice selection of cask ales, premium lagers and spirits and an extensive, award winning wine list.

When it came to choosing our food and drinks we were delighted to see that the menu made suggestions on which wine suited which main course. This is a nice touch, as I’m usually left choosing a Rioja regardless of the colour of the meat.

To start we chose to share the Thai Beef Salad. It was served at the perfect temperature and the beef strips were tender and cooked rare to our taste.

For the main course I chose Lamb Rump Served on a Bed of Sautéed Potatoes with Green Beans, Smoked Bacon Lardons and Spinach with a Roast Onion Puree and my partner opted for Ribeye Steak with Handcut Chips, Field Mushrooms and Pan Fried Cherry Tomatoes. Each dish failed to disappoint, the quality of this food is exceptional, simple yet strong flavours. Every ingredient could be tasted and that’s testament to the fresh produce and cooking technique of the chef.

The menu is comprehensive but not baffling. Clearly this has been well thought out and suitable for a vast range of tastes. The service was tentative and we were never left wanting anything.

I must confess I’m surprised at the quality this restaurant (ahem, Public House) offers. Previous guises have always failed to please and in my eyes I’m confident that through word of mouth alone The Elephant Public House will prosper. Best of luck guys!
