It’s not very often I am lost for words and as a food critique, this would be a great cause for concern. However, every so often, you come across something very special, a gem in the managerie of competitive cuisine, a shining star in the millions of ‘nearly quite theres, but not quite’. When this happens, you find yourself being somewhat smug and think that you have found this special place and you’re not quite sure whether you want to share it with anyone else! But it has been found and share it I must…

Right in the very heart of Clifton Village, sits Prosecco. Unpretentious, modern and chic. We were greeted by Heidi De Rae, the one half of the successful partnership, that is now in its third year. The décor is bright and simplistic with clean lines. The pictures depict Italy and Diego and his family, the other half of Prosecco. Diego is head chef. They both work 6 days a week, a commitment and professionalism which shows.

After a warm welcome, we were seated and given a glass of Prosecco (of course … when in Rome) and shown the menus; 4 courses, 5 if you include the cheeseboard. We plumbed for the homemade chicken liver pate, chutney, ciabatta toast and Mediterranean fish cakes with tomato salsa to start followed by pork belly with 3 salsa accompaniments, verde, apple and chilli and prawns with roasted sauce. This was a taste experience I shall never forget. We were blown away by the sheer brilliance and exquisite flavours. The fishcakes were exactly that, fishcakes, not a breadcrumb in sight. The pork belly was pure bliss and melted in your mouth accompanied by ‘Granny’s homemade chips’, an absolute must have. We had to have one of Prosecco’s delicious deserts which included homemade Tiramisu and chocolate paradiso, heaven. There is an intelligence and dynamic to Prosecco’s food which is unmatched.

Prosecco are not short on compliments. Heidi and Diego De Rae have got it right. So right that Prosecco boasts an impressive CV including being finalists in Gordon Ramsey’s FWord Local Restaurant Awards 2009/2010. When I asked Heidi about the experience, she told me that Gordon was very personable and as Prosecco were doing everything right, there was no need to feel the infamous wrath of Gordon.

I simply cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. There is so much more I want to say. If anything? Book it and enjoy!
