Another Robin Hood tale comes to the big screen,

this time played by the Gladiator Russell Crowe. The Oscar crowd have been unleashed upon this olde English tale with Ridley Scott bringing his spark and big budget equating to breathtaking scenes throughout.

Those even remotely familiar with Robin Hood will be slightly confused by the tale, the film acts as a prequel, there is no robbing the rich to give to the poor it is pre man in tights and merry men. This can be confusing the second film, should there be one, will pick up where the familiar story starts.

The film is not of the blockbusting type we are used to from Scott and Crowe. There is the troublesome accent from Crowe, the unfamiliar storyline and the most annoying King John ever portrayed. I must add that despite these things i found the film very enjoyable, i am a fan of outdoor epics which this film largely is. I think Crowe brings a rugged, masculine image to Robin Hood much like Daniel Craig does to James Bond. The battle scenes are epic, and the introduction of the famous characters, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian, Little John jolts you to memories of the tale buried at the back of your mind. The Sheriff of Nottingham plays a very small part in the film which was surprising but then most things in this films storyline are.

A good if not great film that is worth a watch and sits well against this months other releases.
