Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t. This isn’t your typical love story. This latest offering from the gurus at Twentieth Century Fox and Director Marc Webb is a perfect example of a post-modern love story that is never what you expect it to be. 500 Days of Summer is a romantic comedy released 4th September by the highly-acclaimed music director telling a genuine story of heartbreak with a real sense of emotion throughout. Yet don’t judge a book by its cover just yet, you can forget the run of the mill lashings of cheese that normally come with 21st century romance films, for this tells of a different tale... The film, which is told in a backwards/ forwards fashion, shows Tom attempting to live without Summer, but also at the same time how they first meet. He doesn’t want to get over Summer, instead he is determined to discover the best way win her back. From the notion of transforming emotions to comically-destined ‘lightning only strikes once’ kind of love issues, this fresh and original rom-com shows the characters going through a journey of deep, growing, all-encompassing, omnipresent love. The journey highlights the awkwardness of dating and how to try and get over a break up. Something all of us can relate to somewhere along the line. From the text book lines to cliche excuses, to paranoia, anger, wit and charm we think it’s safe to say we can all relate somewhere. Making 500 Days of Summer a hit for both men and women!

Poised at the cinema with popcorn you will witness Tom looking back at their 500 days together to try and figure out where things went wrong. Yes - the man doing the analysing! So, as we ‘ve already established the film is based on the relationship between Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) over a period of 500 days and condemns the current idea of love, sex and friendship.

Meet Tom. Hi Tom. Tom believes he will only truly be happy when he’s found ‘the one’ whereas Summer does not share this belief and is highly sceptical about the whole concept of love and relationships. Aren’t we all. Already we see a clash between the two leads but equally it’s great, and if not slightly amusing to see roles reversed and the guy being the emotional, heart-driven, flake, searching for his one true love.

Next meet Summer, as critical, sceptical and as cynical as they come. Not looking for a relationship, never pre-empting anything and never sat daydreaming about her dream white wedding or prince charming to ride through the door and whisk her off into the sunset. No. Some may say welcome to the real world, no?

So two characters, two names, two very different mantras. Which will prevail?
