TART auctions for BUST

Jennie and Ellen Bashforth, owners of Tart Café and Foodstore, presented Simon Cawthorn, breast care surgeon from Frenchay Hospital, with a cheque for £1,500.

The money was raised back in November 2010 at Jennie and Ellen’s regular Tart after Dark dinner. Andy Brassington, former Gloucestershire cricketer and a regular at Tart, auctioned off Tart’s head chef Andrew Griffin at the fund-raising evening to raise money for B.U.S.T (the fund-raising arm for the Frenchay Hospital breast care centre.). The event followed national Breast Cancer Awareness Week and money was also raised through ticket sales and a raffle.

The stand-out auction lot of the evening was the opportunity to have head chef, Andrew Griffin, as a personal chef for the night. Following some frenzied bidding and masterful cajoling by auctioneer Andy Brassington, a successful bid of £400 was finally accepted

Andrew admits, ‘I was slightly apprehensive going into the evening but it was a fantastic result and I’m really happy to do my bit for the centre’.

Simon Cawthorn said, ‘This money will be put towards some new diagnostic equipment for the North Bristol Trust. The equipment introduces a new technique to detect cancer cells that may have spread to the lymphnodes during initial breast cancer surgery. This means that they can be operated on at the same time, reducing the need for further surgery. At B.U.S.T we are really pushing for improvements in diagnostic tools for North Bristol’.

This type of fund-raising is close to Jennie’s heart as she is a breast cancer survivor herself and Simon Cawthorn is in fact Jennie’s consultant. 14 years ago Jennie raised money for B.U.S.T by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. ‘Jennie is a great fundraiser for B.U.S.T. Her previous fund-raising went towards the most up to date diagnostic equipment available at the time. Now there is new and improved technology, she has stepped in to help again’, said Simon.

Jennie says, ‘I have survived breast cancer and more and more people are surviving all the time. I just want to do what I can to help keep it increasing’.
