New Citroen C4 Exclusive HDi 150, reviewed by Tim Barnes Clay

28 July 2011

On the road with the new Citroen C4 - Credit: THREE QUARTERS of drivers (29 million) admit they are now using their cars less, with roughly two thirds (62 per cent) saying that the cost of motoring is to blame, according to new research.

The study by Santander Credit Cards reveals that the soaring cost of motoring is forcing drivers off the road, with nearly half (46 per cent) using their vehicles for essential journeys only. More than a fifth (22 per cent) are ditching their cars for environmental reasons, while 16 per cent are simply avoiding heavy traffic.

Many journeys, however, simply cannot be avoided, particularly for motorists living in rural or remote areas. For drivers who have no alternative but to use their car, one of the latest motors to consider investing in is the thrifty new Citroën C4.

Specifically designed to meet the needs of mid-size 5-door hatchback customers and business users, all revamped C4 diesel models qualify for free road tax in the first year. The car also has the technology to encourage economical driving – the instrument display panel houses a gear efficiency indicator, signalling the optimum moment to change gear.

The new C4 is powered by an extensive range of refined and efficient powerplants - three BMW co-developed petrol engines and four efficient HDi diesel units. Power output ranges from a refined 90bhp to a punchy 155bhp. My test car was the Exclusive HDi 2.0 150 6-speed manual - a quick and comfortable car with a top speed of 129mph and a 0-62mph sprint of 8.6 seconds. A fun drive, yes, but more impressive was the C4’s average fuel consumption of over 56mpg. If it was my car I’d also feel good about the 20,000 mile service intervals - it all helps with the monthly bills.

Looks-wise, the C4’s distinctive profile and balanced proportions give a clear impression of strength and stability. Defined and flowing surfaces, such as the purposeful front end and rear spoiler, hint at the model’s optimised aerodynamics. Chrome detailing combines with dynamic headlight styling and sculpted alloy wheels for a sophisticated and impressive road presence.

Inside, the high quality of the new C4’s interior finish is immediately apparent from the tactile soft-touch material on top of the dashboard and the generous amounts of chrome around the dials and vents. This is a car created to deliver a supremely satisfying on-board experience as well as long-term durability.

Behind the wheel, the car delivers precise control and an accomplished drive. The new C4’s driver-focused cockpit immediately releases a feeling of on-road confidence, and personal comfort can be tailored to individual requirements, with changeable instrument display colours and sound alerts.

Other new technologies offered on the C4 include a really useful (and potentially life-saving) blind-spot monitoring system. A cornering light function, cruise control and speed-limiter with favourite speed settings and Citroën’s innovative eTouch Emergency & Assistance System are also available.

One of the safest vehicles in its class, the new C4 has been awarded the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP rating, including a 97% score in the ‘Safety Assist’ category - the highest score for any vehicle of its type.

The latest Citroën C4 is available now with three well-specified trims - VTR, VTR+ and Exclusive - and is attractively priced, starting at just £15,595, rising to £21,495 for the range-topping 2.0HDi 150hp Exclusive.
