The power of social media

I had the great benefit of watching a dragon live in motion, walk with me on this one.

I made a concerted effort to join and interact on twitter yesterday, I signed up and followed people who had authored books I’ve read, appeared in tv shows i watch and generally followed in some media form or another. In total I followed 22 people, it’s a tiny number but would provide me with enough information to get a feel for twitter.

The first thing I noticed is these people actually use this service, we all get bombarded with crap over facebook, this event, will you attend, join my group. Following people that you never do anything more than look at their pictures.
Lets cut to the chase, twitter is different, I noticed a message from a lady looking to make a dream come true for a terminally ill teenager, the dream is for a ride in a Bugatti Veyron. She, as her profile pointed out, is lucky enough to be followed by Peter Jones from Dragons Den, a well aimed tweet @DragonJones set the wheels in motion. She made a genuine call for help to the dragon and what took part before my eyes was quite remarkable. Peter tweets Jenson Button with an off the cuff “have you still got that Veyron”, the reply is sadly negative but points him in the direction of Simon Cowell, within minutes a man named Tom Hartley with a Supercar Sales business steps in and donates the dream.

I am sure many of you are regular twitter users and perhaps this happens all the time, I am new to this and am absolutely amazed at how quickly this happened, through the power of social networking, a true depiction of selfless acts from generous and well connected people.

A direct route to our heroes, peers and friends has been gifted to us, a means to contact any of the above is readily available in this digital age. Join up and get involved, this has truly whet my appetite.
