… showing four paintings in the RWA Autumn exhibition. I am a candidate for membership this year and will find out in January whether they have voted me in. JSA (Jamaica Street Artists) are going to have an exhibition there in January, so I am getting ready for that, too.

My work is ...

…minimalist and abstract. I am interested in patterns, time and traces. I am interested in our need for order and the impossibility to achieve it, our capability for endless repetition and the small variations within it, the remains of structure and the beauty I see in them. I work in a range of media such as drawing, print making, painting and photography and like open ended processes, where one step inspires the next and outcomes are not planned but emerge.

I've been inspired by ...

… in no particular order: plants (again and again), Brice Marden, bark cloth and Showa design, Jochen Zellmann, knitting, my fellow artists at Jamaica Street Studios, geological structures, grids and maps, archaeological sites and artefacts, waterfalls, Giorgio Morandi, masking tape.

I've just read ...

… two German magazines which I bought on a recent trip to Berlin: brand eins, an economy magazine, theme: “Learning to forget”, with articles about the importance and dangers of forgetting in personal life, economy, art and politics (i.e. the balance between learning from the past and being able to let go and move on), and about the roles, difficulties and possibilities of archives and electronic storage of information (overwhelming!). Epoc is a magazine for archaeology and history and had articles about the Nok culture south of the Sahara, possibly one of the first complex societies in that area. It amazes me how much can be deduced from so little information and how little we know on the whole!

I'm listening to ...

… usually nothing. I’m quite happy to work in silence and if I listen to anything it is the radio or music I have had for ages (e.g. The Magic Flute by Mozart or Thomas Fraser, a folk singer from the Shetlands who yodels!).

You might be surprised that ...

… I have got a degree in English literature and History.

It really annoys me when ...

… my students are late. Although they are doing really well so far!

I am just about to ...

… do some more printmaking. I am not good at planning ahead so just do what I can!
