five minutes With... Elaine Jones

02 May 2011

 - Credit: Right now I am ...

I have just finished my first solo show in London at the Fairfax gallery in Chelsea and I am just about to start a big triptych for our studio (Jamaica Street Artists) exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy. It will be 3 canvases each 90x100cm which will work together as one piece. I am really excited about taking on such a big painting, which I hope will be dynamic and spontaneous.

My work is ...

I produce abstract oil paintings that are often inspired by seascapes and landscapes. Sketches on location form a starting point to my canvases and through distortion, exaggeration, poured paint, thick texture, smooth brushstrokes and incidental marks the painting becomes alive with energy and atmosphere. Serene calm is interjected with powerful explosions of colour to produce unique and captivating portrayals of nature in its wildest forms.

I've been inspired by ...

My new body of work has been inspired by expeditions through Costa Rica and Panama. This influence can be seen in the use of greens and oranges inspired by the sunsets, rain and cloud forests of Central America. This contrasts sharply with last years series of ice paintings influenced by a trip to Svalbard in the Arctic.

I've just read ...

The last book that I read was, despite the fallen Snow by Shamim Sarif and it really made me cry. It gives you an insight into communist Russia in the 1950’s whilst retelling the story of a tragic love affair, the ending of which is only fully realised years later in modern day Boston. It is one of those few books where you really like the characters and care about what happens to them.

I'm listening to ...

I have recently been introduced to Thomas Dybdahl a Norwegian musician whose music is really beautiful. The last gig I went to was to see Micah P Hinson whose music I really love even if it is a bit depressing. For a bit of light relief I always like some Kings of Leon or Jack White in whatever band he is in at the moment.

You might be surprised that ...

I am not really keen on Abstract art as a whole. I really love figurative painting especially the old Masters such as Caravaggio.

I am really excited about ...

I have recently been to the Royal Academy to see an exhibition by the Glasgow boys. They are similar to the impressionists but they used really thick sexy paint and are relatively unknown. I highly recommend this exhibition, which displays some really clever artworks with brilliant use of colour and depiction of light.

It really annoys me when ...

I have been moaning about this a lot recently TESCOS, mainly the little express ones. They are absolutely everywhere in Bristol and I really like going to local independent shops which are being forced out of existence.

I am just about to ...

My next body of work will be on display September 6th till the end of October at the Wills Art Warehouse, London.
