Five Minutes With... Rose Sanderson

Rose Sanderson is one of the Jamaica Street Artists, a collective of creative people working from the same studio building just off Stokes Croft in Bristol. She put down her paints for five minutes to talk with us.

Right now I am ...

Working on some new paintings inspired by a recent trip to Mexico during the ‘festival of the dead’, experimenting with colour and texture.

My work is ...

Mainly painting and drawing based, moving from illustration into fine art. I tend to paint on recycled materials; old wood and aged book covers. I am interested in things with a history, the fragile path from life to death. My work is about appreciation, where some may see disgust or distaste, there is intrigue and wonder, I aim to show this.

I've been inspired by ...

Nature in all it’s forms, in particular that which is generally disregarded- the beauty of decay, anatomy, insects and strange creatures. We live in a crazy world and there is so much to explore.

I've just read ...

Andrew McGahan’s ‘Wonders of a Godless World’. A very thought provoking and interesting view of the world, and of humanity, with all it’s oddities. Extremely engaging and hard to put down, I was totally absorbed and unaware of anything that was going on around me whilst reading it.

I'm listening to ...

‘Babylon Circus’; a French gypsy/ ska/ reggae band who I saw at a festival this summer, very lively
and uplifting.

You might be surprised that ...

I have webbed toes

I am really excited about ...

Some shows in the pipeline for next year; a drawing project I am doing with Emma Dibben, a friend and fellow artist, and ‘MetaAnatomica’ (an anatomy based exhibition) in Baths old Walcot Chapel.

It really annoys me when ...

People moan about things but make no effort to do anything about what they are moaning about!

I am just about to ...

Try and fill in my tax return, thinking about how I can actually make a decent living as an artist!
