Five Minutes With... Ian Boyd Walker

Artist and ‘graffer’ Ian Boyd Walker has been around the Bristol street art scene as long as anybody. We caught up with him this issue to check out his fantastic painting for the Clifton fashion boutique Pirates and Roses. Below is a mini interview with the artist himself.

Right now I am …

Working on a commission piece for Pirates and Roses of Clifton that is a painted pirate pastiche of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. My work is generally painted with stencils or created digitally, sometimes a combination of both, often with a quirky ‘low brow’ sense of humour.

I've been inspired by …

Japanese prints, Flaming Carrot Comics, Pop Art, Todd Schorr and Banksy, all simmered together in a big pot.

I've just read …

‘Started early, took my dog’ by Kate Atkinson. The latest in a series of books following the detective career of a character called Jackson Brodie. Once you’ve got it clearly fixed in your mind who each of the characters is then it’s a thoroughly enjoyable crime thriller.

I'm listening to …

Some old skool hardcore from the early ‘90s, the particular highlight has to be: Egyptian Empire – The Horn Track. Well worth searching on youtube.

You might be surprised that …

I passed my driving test on my 18th birthday. Anyone who has been in a car with me might be surprised that I do actually hold a valid license.

I am really excited about …

UpFest 2011 street art festival in Bristol (www.upfest.co.uk), as painting at UpFest 2010 has to be one of the high points of the last year for me.

It really annoys me when …

I can’t find the thing I put down 5 minutes ago, from coffee to keys to my phone, I should have them all on a string round my neck along with a pair of knitted mittens.

Try to organise a solo exhibition of my work for 2011, but haven’t finalised a venue yet.
