Dark Suits: Launch Review

Last night was the opening of Mr Mead’s Dark Suits show at the Antlers Gallery near Broadmead, Bristol. The venue was packed and buzzing with a great vibe, and throughout the night visitors spilled out into the street to enjoy the evening air.

Mr Mead has only been living and working in the city for a year but has quickly made a name for himself with his distinctive drawing style and obsession with the creepy and unusual. I first encountered his work when I stumbled upon an impressive short animation online for which he designed the background scenes. Called Cyren, the film has since been featured in 15 international film festivals. Not bad for a graduation year project.

Nightmare mixes with nostalgia in Mead’s work and the worlds his characters inhabit is not dissimilar to the surreal atmosphere of a Tim Burton film. The new body of work contains macabre scenes of anthropomorphic animal characters set against black backgrounds. The titles are imbued with a similarly dark humour. In one picture the characters feast on children, in another a cat is beheaded.

The centrepiece of the show is a new set of playing cards designed by Mead. The bold black and white designs remind me of the effortless cool of a bottle of Jack Daniels and would be perfect for a late night poker game.

The Antlers Gallery is a nomadic space championing emerging local artists. The show continues until April 23rd, opening 11am-7pm daily.
