Bristol Harbour Festival 2011

28 July 2011

Bristol Harbour Festival is back for its 40th Year this weekend.

One of the biggest free festivals in the country, it is Bristol’s premier cultural festival. This article has a look at some of what’s on offer during this year’s celebrations.

There’s no fireworks display at this year’s festival, but there’s plenty else on offer to keep you entertained. From the 29th to the 31st July, the Invisible Circus will be performing The Rogues Salute at the Umberslade Wapping Wharf Car Park. As part of the late night programme, the circus will be rolling into town from 8pm each night, offering a big top full of salty sea dogs, mermaids and sea monsters and everyone else you would expect to find at a sea-themed circus celebrating delightful delinquency. Dress to please ‘Neptunes wayward children’ and get your tickets - £15 per adult - from the Bristol Ticket Shop website.

For a full programme of dance events, or to book your tickets, call the Arnolfini or Tobacco Factory box office on 0117 917 2300 or 0117 902 0344 respectively.
This year’s Bristol Harbour Festival also offers a full programme of dance events. Spread across the Arnolfini and Tobacco Factory venues, there’s loads to check out. The Dog Kennel Hill Projects explores new contexts of dance and what it can be, whilst Handbag by Geraldine Pilgrim is a 15 minute celebration of great music, dancing and handbags. New dance company ATMA will be performing their first two pieces, Sivaloka and Ghatam, which mix ancient Indian thinking with contemporary experience through the Bharata Natyam dance language. For a full programme of dance events, or to book your tickets, call the Arnolfini or Tobacco Factory box office on 0117 917 2300 or 0117 902 0344 respectively.

It wouldn’t be a celebration of all things maritime if there wasn’t a production of the world’s greatest pirate adventure – Treasure Island. Head down to the Bristol Old Vic on Saturday 30th July to join Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins on their adventure as they search for Captain Flint’s buried treasure. Get your ticks from the Bristol Old Vic box office on 0117 987 7877.

Aside from the main festival events, there will also be an additional week of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the Bristol Harbour Festival. From Monday 25th – Friday 29th July 2011, visitors can check out strolling entertainment, music, boat races, workshops and wildlife tours all down at the harbour. The Build a Boat project will also be in full swing, and there will be a rowing tug of war as a mark of celebration of the first ever festival in 1971.

Check out the video below for some great footage of last year’s Bristol Harbour Festival.
