Bestial Behaviours

The 8 Week Gallery is a temporary project space in Bristol that hosts contemporary art exhibitions and events. It is focused on allowing new and emerging artists to explore their work in the public domain, and seeks to show unique and diverse work across all mediums of art including painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking and performance, in solo and group shows.

Last weekend (Mar 3-6) saw it open at the Motorcycle Showroom space on Stokes Croft where it showed The Bestial Behaviours exhibition. The trio of artists were: the internationally recognised Lauren Porter who works in craft based sculpture (and once knitted a life-size Ferrari), Roxanne Butler who works as a photographer and Ellie Coates whose practice includes drawing and small sculpture.

The exhibition intended to study the relationship between the human and the beast.

Lauren porter's work playfully subverted the traditional hunting culture by re-presenting the motif of the mounted animal head through fine art textiles. Her work on this subject is half riposte half nostalgia and with her choice of materials opposes notions of masculinity and femininity.

Roxanne Butler is interested in the idea of the captured moment in photography, which reveals a parallel between the animalistic tendencies of human and projected social models. She achieves this by presenting images that are both full of domestic intimacy and ephemeral intensity.

Ellie Coates works with the traditional materials of the old masters to explore new approaches to drawing. She uses Greek myths and folklore as a basis to look at how animals take on human characteristics. She references Victoriana and the Idea of the collector/botanist in her attention to detail and presentation.

The Motorcycle Showroom has taken on many guises of late most recently an exhibition space, and the now defunct vintage clothes shop The Goldmine. It's a great venue for exhibitions and I hope there will be many more.
